Tissue testing is the best technique for identifying and monitoring the levels of trace elements in most crops. Samples should be taken early in the week and early on the day to ensure a fresh sample reaches the laboratory for analysis. In cereals, the best time to take a sample is the period six to 10 weeks after seeding. Gloves should be worn to prevent contamination. It is also important to sample the right part of the plant. In cereals, this is the youngest emerged leaf of the plant.
For information on other crops, visit our Ask the Agronomist section. Crops need to be monitored for deficiencies in nitrogen and the trace elements, copper, zinc and manganese. Proper testing can help to prevent any yield losses. Check crops early and regularly for insects, weeds, disease, plant density, nitrogen and trace element levels.
Hi Fert offers independent field-testing services for nitrogen through local Dealers. The results, together with other information about the crop and paddock, can be used to determine how much nitrogen should be applied.
Further details about testing services and nutrient deficiencies are available from your nearest Hi Fert dealer.
